Does anyone else remember the 3D Pipes screensaver for windows? and how a random teapot would appear at one of the joints in the pipes? that was so much fun!! random joyfulness! my roommates and i would just yell out “Teapot!!” if we happened to see one. it was fabulous.
does anyone know why windows took it away? or do they just have something against joy? Considering some of the other shit microsoft has done, the latter wouldn’t surprise me.
If you had to get a tattoo right now, what would it be and why?
Ok, so hold on. Tattoos are not something you “have to do”. They are something that you love to do, look forward to, and would happily use any excuse to justify. Want to make that abundantly clear. There is zero external obligation in the intentional act of permanently marking/scarring your body. If there is, you have a big problem.
That said…
I have no frickin clue, and have not designed/decided what my next one will be. I have so many ideas! If we are talking split second decision, though, and no societal impact, i would get a blue crescent moon just above and centered between my eyes.
The meaning behind it is complex, and ties to literature, metaphysics, family, and self-image. I don’t know if i can really explain it in a blog post. But to answer the “why”… because i want to. And that’s all the reason i need.
How do you deal with uncertainty?
There have been points in my adult life where I have seriously considered outsourcing all of my decisions to a toy. Severe cognitive fatigue is real.
Seriously, though, i don’t know how to answer that… i mean, life is riddled with uncertainty. The only certain thing about life is the fact that it eventually ends.
So how do i deal with life? Messily. Like most other people. Life doesn’t come with a frickin manual and nobody, i mean not a single human being ever, had a life where they didn’t deal with some kind of uncertainty on a regular basis. Granted, there’s a difference between “will i get eaten by a wild animal today?” and “do i cook tonight or order in?”, but still. The best any of us can do is gather information, consult our guts, and take a chance. Or do nothing. And all that does is waste time before the arrival of the only certainty in life.
I’ll take my chances.
What’s a moment when a stranger completely restored your faith in people?
I think I’ve written about this before, but on a particularly hard day physically, a stranger stopped to help me. And i’m talking stopped his truck in the middle of a busy parking lot, jumped out and ran over to put the heavy bags of dog food and bird seed in my trunk kinda stopped to help me. I think he left the damn truck running! Lol
That moment went beyond random act of kindness. That was pure goodness, gloriously embodied.
What’s a thing you wish schools actually taught?
I’m assuming this is a k-12 thing, since you can probly find just about anything at a college. Hell, i took a course devoted to a number, so…
In the gen ed sense, though, i wish schools taught practical shit. Budgeting, cooking, changing the oil/battery/a tire on your car. Ya know, shit you need in order to function with any measure of self-sufficiency.
Teaching that to kids early is way better than the trial by fire that most people find themselves in.

It’s nothing specific, necessarily. I just want to help as many people as I can.

What is meant by “who you are”? Inherent qualities? If so, like what? Or does it refer instead to culture? Status?
Aside from all that, it’s both, simply put. Experience feeds into identity, which then directs experiences. They are part of a feedback loop and their impact is at once time dependent, shared and contextual.
It all depends. 😉
