When i was a kid, i would sometimes catch my mom staring into space, completely blank expression. It was hard to get her attention sometimes, too. I thought it was weird, but she always shrugged it off like it was a normal thing. She said she was just lost in thought.
As it turns out, I do this too. No clue when it started, but i have realized at least part of why this happens. If you stare off into the distance and soften your focus (or just take your glasses off!), and relax, the image in your mind’s eye gets sharper, more robust. staring off into space facilitates the mechanism for the brain to shift focus. It needs to minimize other processing…
This is a functional quirk, and i kinda dig that.
