The Point – part 8

Going back to the campfire conversation from the other night for a moment, spirituality came up as a topic. Neither of us is a religious person, but we both agree that the degree of precision in existence is compelling enough to say that it cannot be simple chance or happenstance. Everything from the location of our planet to the conditions necessary for atoms in the “primordial soup” to coalesce in such a way that allowed for the formation of proteins and, therefore, life in general.

I suppose this conversation allowed me to solidify the fact that I cannot accept the idea of a completely random existence. It just doesn’t make sense. I mean, don’t get me wrong, there is no concrete evidence of a purposeful existence, but the circumstantial evidence is astounding. I’m not a T.V. person, but there is a scene from a prequel to The Big Bang Theory – it’s about Sheldon as a kid, where he’s talking to his mom, who is having a crisis of faith, and explains to her that if things weren’t just the way they are, life as we know it wouldn’t exist. And he’s right. Everything was perfect for life to form, and I don’t see that happening without intent. The existence of life is essentially a statistical improbability, yet here we are.

As an aside, I’d like to point out that this set of ramblings is really just for me to figure out the “why” of life in and on my own terms. As I’ve said before, there is no way for me to know for sure, but I am bound and determined to come to a conclusion or die trying to reach one.

That said, where does this recent revelation leave me? Well, I have ruled out a random existence based on circumstantial evidence. That leaves me with intentional existence. But intent of whom, or what? What criteria would such a being or thing have to have? Omniscience. Omnipresence. Omnipotent. I know this sounds a lot like I’m describing a god, but, if you really think about it, gods are created by people and based largely on their culture. That’s a conversation for a different day, however. But, I do think there is something behind all of this. What that is, I have no idea. Could it be a god? Aliens? A hologram? A crazy trip or dream experience of some being that we will never comprehend? Yes, any of these is possible. And I have no idea how to figure out which one it is.
