I get text alerts from the town I live in, and I got one this morning that got me thinkin. We’re in the middle of a snowstorm, and the town offices and court are closed today. Garbage pickup, however, remains operational and on the normal schedule.
Basically, all the people who are inside and warm all day get a day off, but the people who are out in the cold, driving giant trucks around picking up our trash have to work regardless of the fact that there’s a few inches of snow on the ground. The guys driving the plows and salt trucks also have to work.
I just can’t help but wonder, what the actual fuck? It brings back the idea of essential workers during covid. The truly necessary people in this world are not the ones who sit in offices all day staring at a computer screen. The truly necessary people are the ones who do the work that no one else wants to in order for society to operate and the rest of us to be comfortable, and quite honestly, a bit lazy. Now, for the record, I say this as one of those people who sits at a computer all day. I am not truly necessary by my own definition; I acknowledge and accept that.
I think that as a society, we have our priorities all sorts of wrong. I have seen or heard people treat/speak of these types of workers as lesser people just because they have manual labor jobs, which is bullshit. We idolize and throw money at movie stars, sports figures, and pay our politicians insane amounts of money. And ya know what? Not a single fucking one of those people does a damn thing to help you with day to day life. So, again, what the fuck?
