Those who write lyrics and then are able to put them to music or work with someone to do so absolutely astound me. I am mystified by and envious of their talent.
Lyrics are so concise, yet so powerful. Take Buffalo Springfield for example – What It’s Worth. One of my favorites when I was a kid. Almost sixty years after it was written, it is still relevant! Another example. Staind -A Flat. The amount of unbridled emotion illustrated within 5 minutes is just unreal.
Lyrics are always what gets me in a song, I love the music too, don’t get me wrong. Heavy bass and drums are some of my favorite musical elements. But sing of something true? Profound? Emotional? Raw? Yes, please!
I write about what I think are important or at least interesting things, definitely emotional at times, perhaps profound or thought provoking. But my writing is more verbose and not nearly as discrete as lyrics are. I envy that.
I know I will never be a lyricist because my writing style includes too much meandering and too many tangents. But, if you are a song writer, an aspiring songwriter, or a poet of any sort, carry on! I thank you, appreciate you, and can only wish for your skill.
